PERRY WORLD HOUSE
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia

The founding of a new University-wide initiative for international studies and activities prompted revisions to our previous feasibility study for this critical site along the main pedestrian spine of the campus. We developed two new design options, both aiming to honor the scale and rhythm of the historic houses on this block of Locust Walk. One scheme preserves the existing 19th Century Gothic Revival cottage attributed to Samuel Sloan and proposes an addition. The other scheme proposes replacement of the cottage with all new construction that also reflects a rhythm of massing of the adjacent small scaled structures. Because of the small site and the demands of the program, a scheme involving all new construction may well offer the best opportunity to achieve a unified architectural expression that also enhances this important gateway site.
