FABULOUS FOURTH STREET
Louisville, KY

This is an ambitious urban design proposal for downtown Louisville that provides recommendations for helping Louisville realize its centuries-old potential as a great mid-sized exciting and urban river city.  The corner of Main and Fourth Streets is arguably Louisville’s most important and historic intersection.  However, presently there is no strong sense of place on Fourth Street between Main and Market Streets, mostly parking garages that are devoid of ground floor life.  We see a great opportunity to establish two remarkable urban spaces on Fourth Street, one at the intersection of Main Street and one between Liberty and Jefferson Streets near Fourth Street Live!, an entertainment venue, and the Kentucky International Convention Center that could rival other great urban public spaces in the United States.  This proposal also strongly recommends opening Fourth Street to traffic 24/7, street parking, new street lighting and the removal of the canopy at Fourth Street Live! thus uncovering wonderful facades and permitting a continuous street view.
